Cultured Pearl Necklaces:

Let Nature Flatter Nature with Cultured Pearl Necklaces

Cultured pearl necklaces are some of the most beautiful and feminine pieces of jewelry. Contrary to popular belief, pears come in a variety of shades and colors, not just white or cream, and therefore they can flatter a wide range of looks and skin tones.

What are Pearls?

Pearls are a naturally formed semi-precious gem stone. They are most well known for forming inside oysters but any mollusks can form pearls under the right circumstances. When an irritant like grit or sand or maybe even a small parasite gets into the mollusk it secretes the substance which makes the mollusk shell and this builds up around the piece of grit.

Eventually, over a period of years, a pearl is formed from these secretions. Divers harvested these natural pearls for centuries, into a cheaper way was found to farm a cheaper cultured pearl; necklaces made from these cheaper but no less beautiful gems are a highly prized possession.

What Makes Cultured Pearls Different?

Like a lot of things in nature, forming pearls takes a while – years usually. And harvesting them in their natural, sea environment can be time-consuming and difficult, so Man decided to speed up the process and gain control over this process.

That is how we got cultured pearl necklaces which are within the price range of many people as effectively farming the pearls makes the process a lot cheaper so cultured pearl necklaces are cheaper too. After the cultured pearls are harvested, if the mollusk survives, more grit can be implanted so the process can begin again.

Cultured pearl necklaces obviously take a lot of pearls, so this farming process secures their production much more effectively than relying on nature and traditional harvesting methods. This process was patented in Japan in the late nineteenth century.

Colors and Shades

Cultured pearl necklaces can have a beautiful luster and iridescence because of the way light reflects back off the various layers of hardened secretion which make up the pearl. The gem stones can be found in a variety of colors from cream, through yellow to orange and even pink which make cultured pearl necklaces, with a whole string of these gems, a truly unique and beautiful piece of jewelry.
